The Daystar was the first of our specially designed new class of ‘round bilge’ trawlers, the brainchild of our dedicated marine architect Ian Paton and resulting from his extensive fluid dynamics analysis which showed this type of layout offers much greater fuel efficiency.

The vessel is a prawn trawler designed to fish and handle its catch using methods developed on the east coast of Scotland.

It features a customised, three-barrel, two-speed trawl winch (35 tonnes) with a drum capacity for 750 fathoms of 22mm-diameter wire, two two-by-12 tonne split net drums, a seven-five tonne Gilson winch and two auxiliary gear-handling winches, manufactured by EK Marine of Killybegs.

The same company also produced the knuckle boom powerblock (1.5 tonnes at 6.7 metres) and stiff boom landing (one tonne at eight metre) cranes.

The vessel houses 20,000 litres of fuel in four tanks, including two double-bottomed tanks under the floor of the fish room, which has a working capacity of 950 boxes. 19,000 litres of fresh water are carried in its bulbous bow tank, which supplies a 2.5-tonne Geneglace ice machine installed by Premier Refrigeration, together with the catch-chilling system.

As a result of this impressive spec, the vessel was nominated in the ‘Boat of the Year’ category of the 2017 Fishing News Awards.

Daystar owner Stephen West skippers the trawler, with a five-man crew, he said:

“The Daystar has been out as much as possible since her launch, weather permitting, trawling mainly for prawns off Fraserburgh in the North Sea.

“I’ve been very surprised and impressed by her fuel economy, which is a result of Parkol’s hull design. We’re also really pleased with the boat’s interior, everything is so well finished.

“This was the first time I’d worked with Parkol, they were excellent to deal with and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the yard’s service and the end product. I’d definitely choose them again, in fact I’m looking at booking another build slot for 2023.”
