Sparkling Star UL 290

We were very proud to have the opportunity to build the twin rig Sparkling Star trawler at our Whitby yard.  The first new boat to be purchased by long-serving skipper James Corbett, in partnership with Don Fishing, and designed to catch monkfish and megrims out of Kinlochbervie and Peterhead in Scotland, she symbolised the hopes and dreams of his mariner family.

She was also the first new boat built for a local skipper since John McKay ordered the Loch Incard II UL44, in 1985.

This fully shelter-decked boat features a bespoke new round bilge hull design, marking a new class of vessels created by our dedicated marine architect Ian Paton, for maximum performance in the water, and increased fuel efficiency.

We designed her to be very fuel efficient, using on average 45 litres an hour when towing out gear, which she does with ease.

According to James’s instructions, she is fitted with the highest spec in every regard, and is a comfortable, efficient and safe boat which serves his crew well when out on five-to-six day fishing expeditions off Scotland’s west coast.

At the evening celebration of the trawler’s launch, our directors Andrew Oliver and Jim Morrison were delighted to present new owner James with a scale model of Sparkling Star, made by Redcar model boat builder Ron Harker.

Ian especially designed the round bilge hull using computerised fluid flow monitoring techniques to maximise fuel efficiency at an average of 45 litres an hour when towing at 900rpm.

An extended deckhouse design maximises the amount of internal space, incorporating a watertight, full-width steel bulkhead to enable it to extend from the port to starboard rails, enhancing the safety of the boat while eliminating any risk of water entering the accommodation areas.

We also fitted the vessel with high quality galley, messroom and sleeping quarter furnishings for crew comfort and a hyper-efficient fish handling system to minimise crew labour and maximise catch capacity and quality.

While it might be some years before James Corbett considers building another boat, he has no hesitation about which shipbuilder he’d choose to work with.

You couldn’t ask for better people to work with than Parkol.

Throughout the whole design and build process they answered all my queries straight away, and I was able to ask for little changes with no issue at all. They were brilliant.
